Sinterklaas

Saint Nicholas day or Sinterklaas is officially celebrated in the Netherlands on the 5th of December, especially in families with little children. However, this celebration starts in November, when Saint Nicholas arrives in the Netherlands, and visits cities one by one, including Groningen. Children are encouraged to leave a shoe out for Saint Nicholas. They believe that at night, when they are asleep, Saint Nicholas comes by on his white horse named Amerigo, and leaves sweets or presents. Gifts are accompanied by poems, something which is also common amongst Dutch adults (and international students:) ). This festivity is synonymous to traditional sweets such as pepernoot, taaitaai, chocolate letters and marzipan.

A version of secret santa called lootjes trekken is played.

University Matching & Selection Process

Matching

Matching is a method that is used by the University of Groningen to help students determine whether their chosen degree programme matches their abilities and expectations. It is compulsory for the following faculties and programmes:

Το matching είναι μια μέθοδος που χρησιμοποιείται από το Πανεπιστήμιο του Groningen για να βοηθήσει τους φοιτητές να προσδιορίσουν αν το πρόγραμμα σπουδών που έχουν επιλέξει ταιριάζει με τις ικανότητες και τις προσδοκίες τους. Είναι υποχρεωτική για τις ακόλουθες σχολές και προγράμματα σπουδών:

Faculty of Behavioural and Social Sciences (with the exception of the Bachelor’s programme in Pedagogical Sciences )
Faculty of Medical Sciences (Bachelor’s degree in Human Movement Sciences)
Faculty of Law
Faculty of Spatial Sciences (Bachelor’s programme in Spatial Planning and Design)
Faculty of Science and Engineering

Bachelor’s programs with selection procedures or numerus fixus are not included in programmes for which matching is mandatory.

The deadline is 1 of May 2023 for registering as a first year student for the 2023/2024 academic year.

The procedures and dates of the matching activities differ for each degree programme, so check the matching page of your degree or faculty for the exact procedure, or contact the matching coordinator of the programme. You can find links for the above on the university website:

Τα πτυχιακά προγράμματα με διαδικασίες επιλογής (selection procedure) ή numerus fixus δεν περιλαμβάνονται στα προγράμματα για τα οποία η αντιστοίχιση είναι υποχρεωτική.

Η προθεσμία εγγραφής ως πρωτοετών φοιτητών για το ακαδημαϊκό έτος 2023/2024 λήγει την 1η Μαΐου 2023.

Selection Procedures

Programmes with Selection Procedures or “Numerus Fixus Programmes” are programmes for which you need to undergo a test or series of tests in order to be accepted to the programme. These programmes have a limited amount of places available for students, so apart of the admissions procedure (grades etc.), you also need to do well in the selection procedure, in order to secure a place.

Προγράμματα με διαδικασίες επιλογής ή προγράμματα Numerus Fixus είναι προγράμματα για τα οποία πρέπει να υποβληθείτε σε εξετάσεις ή σειρά εξετάσεων προκειμένου να γίνετε δεκτοί στο πρόγραμμα. Αυτά τα προγράμματα έχουν περιορισμένο αριθμό θέσεων για τους φοιτητές, οπότε εκτός από τη διαδικασία εισαγωγής (βαθμοί κ.λπ.), πρέπει επίσης να πάτε καλά στη διαδικασία επιλογής, προκειμένου να εξασφαλίσετε μια θέση.
